Joaquin and the Pekkybirds: A Brooklyn Story is seeking community support through a crowdfunding campaign.
During a time when building community and fostering acceptance is more important than ever, Brooklyn-based author Angela Welch and Louisville, Kentucky-based artist Geoff Crowe have created a children's book that serves as a celebration of community in one special neighborhood in the heart of Brooklyn: Ditmas Park.
Joaquin and the Pekkybirds: A Brooklyn Story is an illustrated tale for children of all ages. It follows a boy through neighborhood adventures as he wrestles with and manages his own feelings, thanks to the appearance of a mysterious bird. Set in a particularly diverse area of Brooklyn, children of many backgrounds, often underrepresented in children's literature, will see themselves naturally on the pages of this book.
Ditmas Park Publishing is a different kind of publisher, a colorful, artistic and vibrant kind.
Ditmas Park Publishing (DPP) was formed in the summer of 2019, for the purpose of publishing the children’s book "Joaquin and the Pekkybirds, A Brooklyn Story." Soon after starting DPP, it occurred to us that there were many other stories to be told in this little neighborhood of ours, and that DPP could help bring those stories to fruition.
If you have a story you’d like to tell, DPP can help. We offer writing classes, editing and self-publishing consulting services, and if you need help with illustrations, we also have several artists in our network.
Ditmas Park is a vibrant, creative place to live and work. There are many, artists of all flavors here. And yes, as our logo implies, there are wild parrots looming around; The Quaker Parrot. There are different theories as to how they ended up in Brooklyn, but like all of us, however they got here, this is now their home.
